Virtuoso: Pennsylvania’s Nemacolin Resort Wraps Up a $500 Million Overhaul

Almost every corner of the 2,200-acre sporting estate has seen upgrades.

For nearly 40 years, travelers have come to rural Pennsylvania, about an hour’s drive southeast of Pittsburgh, to check into Nemacolin, a 280-room retreat known for its golf, outdoor recreation facilities, spa, and fine-dining. And as a three-year, more than $500 million overhaul wraps up, the family-owned property has even more reasons for guests to return.

The renovation – overseen by second-generation Nemacolin owner Maggie Hardy – is one of the largest the U.S. hospitality industry has ever seen. Practically every corner of the more than 2,200-acre resort was touched, including top-to-bottom upgrades of two of its three hotels, major improvements to both golf courses, a new destination golf academy, new bars and restaurants, and a reimagining of its popular casino.
